By Chad Mearns The summer concert series at the Roxbury Bandshell is over, but the Johnstown landmark will rock at least once more this year during the Rockin' in the Valley Showcase, to be held Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. The free concert features six regional bands among the 15 contestants participating in the year's Rockin' in the Valley, an online original music competition sponsored by Our Town, a weekly newspaper serving more than 36,000 households in the Johnstown area. The contest allows registered online users to join a panel of six judges in rating the 15 regional musicians in terms of originality and creativity, musicianship and general appeal. During each week of the five-round competition, contestants upload a different original recording onto the contest Web site, www.rockininthevalley.com. The four performers with the highest combined score after four rounds will advance to the final, winner-take all round, set to begin Oct. 23. Prizes will be awarded to the top-placing contestants and to selected online voters alike. The contest was introduced in 2006, but the upcoming concert will be the first live event connected to Rockin' in the Valley. The showcase will feature 25-minute sets from Christian metal guitar virtuoso Pastor Brad, classic rockers Yuz Guyz, jam rockers One Track Mynd, Christian rock band LifeÕs Long Wait, Americana artist Jeff Perigo and alterna-punk three-piece Above the Screaming. Area radio personalities Amy Wright and Jonathan Reed of Hot 92 and Hot 100 are scheduled to emcee the event.
Attendance to the concert is free, but donations to support the ongoing renovations at the Bandshell will be taken. The Roxbury Bandshell is located in Roxbury Park at 1430 Franklin Street. For additional information, call (814) 269-9704 |
